Activism, education, and government lobbying non-profit organization to put a stop to animal cruelty wherever it is found: Rescue and help animals suffering and dying in laboratories, on factory farms, in the fur industry, in circuses, and in other forms of "entertainment." Grassroots and consumer campaigns include Proctor and Gamble, Fur, Fishing, College Action, Consumer Products, Animal Experimentation, Wildlife, Companion Animals, and Vegetarianism. PeTA's informative website, www.peta-online.org/cmp/cveg.html, has many online articles about vegetarianism's popularity, recipes, health benefits, and slaughterhouse cruelty. An annual donation of $16 gives you a membership and a subscription to Animal Times, but more importantly, continues the education, activism and consiousness-raising for a vegan lifestyle.

9/9/99 Candle Cafe celebrates their Fifth Anniversary.

9/7/99 Candle Cafe donates desert catering to a fashion show benefit for the Humane Society of New York, co-sponsored with the Jivamukti Yoga Center. High fashion meets higher conciousness when top models and noted personalities walk the catwalk, dressed by leading designers and accompanied by equally well-dressed pets (their own, or animals from the Societyıs adoption center.) Participants include Christy Turlington, Sting, Willem DaFoe, Todd Oldham, Mary Tyler Moore, Bernadette Peters, Michael J. Fox, Donna Karan, and Betsy Johnson. Animal Mukti will embrace the principles of Yoga-a state of non-harming and Union with all beings-and it's very concrete goals include: Raising funds to underwrite free spay/neuter in the Humane Sociey of New York's non-profit veterinary clinic. The Society's clinic is open seven days to promote pet health and combat animal overpopulation. In addition, another goal is to raise awareness of the animals that wait for adoption in shelters, and the conditions presently endured by pets in the New York City system. It receives no government funding. Humane Society of New York is an adoption facility and a veterinary hospital on East 59th Street just off of First Avenue in Manhattan.
